PALAVRAS DE NELSINHO PIQUET

Para quem gosta de Fórmula 1 - como eu - e vem acompanhando a trama de Simgapura entre o Nelsinho Piquet e a Renault - mais precisamente, Flávio Briatore - abaixo em inglês a última palavra de Nelsinho. Qualquer dúvida, podem postar nos "comentários".

I am relieved that the FIA investigation has now been concluded. Those now running the Renault F1 Team took the decision, as I did, that it is better that the truth be known and accept the consequences. The most positive thing to come from bringing this to the attention of the FIA is that nothing like it will ever happen again

I bitterly regret my actions to follow the orders I was given. I wish every day that I had not done it.

I do not know how far my explanation will go to making people understand because for many being a racing driver is an amazing privilege, as it was for me. All I can tell you is that my situation at Renault turned into a nightmare. Having dreamed of being a Formula One driver and having worked so hard to get there, I found myself at the mercy of Mr Briatore. His true character, which had previously only been known to those he had treated like this in the past, is now known.

Mr Briatore was my manager as well as the team boss, he had my future in his hands but he cared nothing for it. By the time of the Singapore GP he had isolated me and driven me to the lowest point I had ever reached in my life. Now that I am out of that situation I cannot believe that I agreed to the plan, but when it was put to me I felt that I was in no position to refuse. Listening now to Mr Briatore's reaction to my crash and hearing the comments he has made to the press over the last two weeks it is clear to me that I was simply being used by him then to be discarded and left to ridicule.

I have had to learn some very difficult lessons over the last 12 months and reconsider what is valuable in life. What has not changed is my love for Formula One and hunger to race again. I realise that I have to start my career from zero. I can only hope that a team will recognise how badly I was stifled at Renault and give me an opportunity to show what I promised in my career in F3 and GP2. What can be assured is that there will be no driver in Formula One as determined as me to prove myself.

As my final words on this matter, I would like to repeat that I am so sorry to those who work in Formula One (including the many good people at Renault) the fans and the governing body. I do not expect this to be forgiven or forgotten but at least now people can draw their conclusions based upon what really happened.

MORTIMER - STORY TELLING

Abaixo uma análise do livro Mortimer feita por minha esposa para sua pós-graduação.

Analyzing “Mortimer”, a story written by Robert Munsch, according to Bakhtin.

According to Bakhtin, there are “voices” in our discourses that represent all the external influences that we receive, such as family conversations, school time, what we watch, listen to, situations that we lived, and examples from others. These voices impact our subconscious and mold our thoughts and actions.

Vygostsky also says that our life is full of meanings and the influence of the social world happens through processes in different ways or levels. It means everything we experience and how we live will help us to build our development.

When we analyze one´s speech, writing creations or even attitudes, these voices sometimes can be easily visible. Nevertheless, it is very hard to recognize some voices, especially if we don't have the same life experience of the person we are analyzing.

These experiences can be quite singular or plural. There are experiences that are common for most people such as family relationships, having a puppy, going to school, dating, eating in a restaurant, and there are others that can not be shared with the majority, such as a trauma, a special trip, and any other experience that are exclusive of a group or a culture.

In a text analysis it is important to think about points like: Who is the author writing to? In which situation is he writing? What is his purpose on writing? These points will clarify the analyst view and bring knowledge on what he is analyzing.

For Bakhtin, to understand a text without judging it is impossible. We approach a text according to our point of view. Our worlds and the other´s worlds are divided; however, they create a dialogism that makes the text meaningful to the reader.

In Robert Munch´s book, “Mortimer”, a simple dialogism is created because of the theme. Analyzing this fiction, we can notice many of the “voices” that most of people shared in childhood. In the beginning it is shown Mortimer's mother putting him into bed and the difficulty he had to be quiet. This evidences when we are children and try to call people’s attention.

The feelings of being misunderstood by the other members of the family and left alone when you don’t want to are experiences that we can notice in this story since the first pages. And this is absorbed by children’s understanding.

On page one and two the author reinforces these feelings with his vocabulary choice, saying that his mother “Threw him into bed”, instead of using “Put him into bed”, giving an idea that his mom just had left him there in an unkind way.

The picture on page 2 of Mortimer under his blanket talks for itself. It transmits an idea of fear and pity. The fact of having to do something he doesn't want to represent some voices that we can bring from our childhood and the author seems to know that these feelings are present in the lives of all children.

Thinking again of Vygostsky, the fundamental human psychology is social, that is why we can say it is historical. The symbols that create human’s environment are shared by a society and can be interpreted. Therefore, an important matter of gender that is related strictly with boys and can be observed in Mortimer's story is his room colored all in blue. The bed, the walls, the curtains, blankets, windows, every thing is blue. Why can’t Mortimer be a girl? We can possibly conclude that girls receive more attention and care, “Girls are fragile”, and it seems to be a common sense. One has to be strong and active and the other week and passive. (Rousseau, Emilio, Martins Fontes, 1995, p. 492).

Maybe it would be weird to see people yelling at a girl all the time as it was happening to Mortimer in the story, and focusing on boys the author would be more realistic.

In the story, every time that someone comes to yell “MORTIMER, BE QUIET”, Mortimer waits and after they get downstairs, he starts singing his song:

Clang, clang, rattle-bing-bang
Gonna make my noise all day.
Clang, clang, rattle-bing-bang
Gonna make my noise all day.

This is the way that Mortimer finds to get attention. It is his instrument to get what he wants. This is a human characteristic, to create ways to achieve one’s goal. When we see that our strategy works well we will always use it to mediate our actions.

Mortimer’s speech has words representing sounds. “Clang”, for instance, reminds a spoon hitting a pan lid. “Bing-bang” reminds something ringing or rattling. Children’s sound effects are part of their speech; they transfer physical acts to their language. Froebel says that through playing, children try to understand the world, when the child imitates a sound of the world it is an unconscious thought that helps the child to develop his/her conscience.

Word transfer was the first term that Freud used to talk about transferring. In a roll this term was transformed in people transfer, objects transfer, until we get to, how you know, the feelings transfer. (Antonio Di Caccia, A transferência – A Escola de Lacan, hoje, Salvador: Editora Fator, 1992, p.26).

Through the pictures representing the time that Mortimer is singing we can see how passionate he is. This passion for life is a common characteristic among children in the age that apparently Mortimer is (4 or 5 years-old). The picture of page 12, after his brothers and sisters left the room, shows how excited he is in singing and calling for attention. Mortimer is playing with his family; he doesn’t seem to understand that it is time to sleep.

Another traditional picture is that in the story, the father is reading the newspaper, sitting on the armchair. Mortimer is doing his noise and then his father has to leave the newspaper to go upstairs and ask for silence. Like his mother, the father is not kind.

A picture of childhood that represents a mix of fear and respect is the one with the police, in the story there were two policemen. They appear in the story intimidating Mortimer to stop with his noise, but even that doesn't work.

The last time that Mortimer sang no one came to yell at him. According to the story they start to discuss downstairs and “Upstairs, Mortimer got so tired waiting for someone to come up that he fell asleep.” Rousseau, on his book Emilio, says that a child just cries out when knows that he/she is going to be heard.

If the child is delicate, sensitive and naturally starts to scream for nothing, yelling for no reason or consequence, soon I will dry this fountain. While the child keeps crying, I will not look after he/she; as soon as she/he gets still and quiet, I will run and help he/she. Therefore the way to the child call me will be the silence, or at least just one shout. (Rousseau, Emilio, Martins Fontes, 1995, p.65).

Maybe that is what happened to Mortimer, when no one was listening he just fell asleep.

Only two different speeches can be observed in the story, one was Mortimer’s family and policemen “MORTIMER, BE QUIET” and the other from Mortimer “Clang, clang, rattle-bing-bang, Gonna make my noise all day”. The rest of the story is describing what it is happening, which consisted basically of the going up and down on the stairs of people asking Mortimer to be quiet, and it even brings to children a sound that they can imitate, the sound of the steps on the stairs, every time it is composed by six “thump” up and five “thump” down.

The author describes the tone of the voices that tell Mortimer to be quiet with “yelled”, “tremendous”, “loud”, “very deep, policemen-type voices”. All of this descriptions help us and let alone children to visualize the feeling of who is asking for silence and even Mortimer’s feelings.

In a conscious or even unconscious way the author seems to feel all those childhood characteristics and peculiarities. Therefore, he achieves in a simple way, with only two speeches, a dialogism that I assume can be universally understood.
